Who Needs Dental Fillings?

One of the oldest dental practices, replacing cavities inside teeth or other decay with a small filling is one of the most routine procedures we perform. Fillings are critical for any patient with minor tooth decay, including cavities, because they’re the first line of defense in preventing more serious problems. Failing to get small fillings for minor cavities can lead to severe dental decay and, potentially, tooth loss. Coming in for regular cleaning appointments and exams, and treating any cavities immediately, is the best preventative maintenance you can provide your mouth.

What Is a Mercury-Free Filling?

Thankfully, dentists no longer need to use the metallic, unsightly fillings of the past. Mercury-free composite fillings are made from a tooth-colored resin that blends seamlessly with the rest of your teeth. This resin is just as strong as the old metal fillings and actually bonds more securely to your tooth, creating a longer-lasting and more durable restoration.

If you have a silver-colored amalgam filling currently in your mouth, there’s no reason to be overly concerned about the amount of mercury involved but there are other associated issues that a composite filling could fix. Amalgam fillings can expand and contract based on temperature, allowing food to enter hard-to-reach spots between or within your teeth, and that bit of silver in your mouth can be visible when you talk or chew. The good news is that those fillings are replaceable with the new composite resin, so you don’t have to live with that metal forever.

Dental Filling Procedure

When a cavity is discovered, ideally during your every-six-month dental cleaning and exam, Dr. Villaseñor will clean the area and carefully extract all of the decayed areas. The resin is then applied in its place and quickly dried using a custom light to bond the material to your tooth. If necessary, the filling is then shaped to restore your natural bite.
